Tricks 'n' Traps

These are some of the cool/useful gadgets I and my friends use while skirmishing :

Tripwires

Personal Alarm Tripwire

Quoted verbatim from a message I posted on the "Airsoft Mailing List " (apart from spelling corrections)

" Another alarm is a regular personal attack alarm. Take a   personal attack alarm, one where you have to pull a pin out to set it off. Just tie a piece of fishing line to the pin and tie the other end to something else, when they walk through the tripwire
they will set off the alarm and you will know where they are. "

Party popper Tripwires

Quoted verbatim from a message I posted on the "Airsoft Mailing List " (apart from spelling corrections)

" In the UK, go down to your local branch of Wilkinsons/Wilko whatever you call it and get a small mouse trap and some party poppers, you will probably have to go somewhere else for the fishing line [fishing shop ?!!?!?!] but they do sell
string.

Right :

Take a length of string or fishing line and make a loop on one end, when you're ready hook that onto the hook on the moveable piece of wood. Then take the string on the party popper and tie that to the metal bit which kills the mouse. and tape the party popper body to the back of the trap. You have to arrange it so there isn't much slack on the string, but so the bit where the
string comes out is level with the edge of the trap. Then put the tripwire in between two trees and put the end with the loop on, on the hook that you are supposed to put the cheese on. When the victim walks through the tripwire it sets off the mousetrap and then the party popper. What's the point of this I here you ask, YOU FOOLS, it is so you know when the enemy is coming, when the bang is heard, you know that the enemy have reached the place where you set the tripwire. Another trick would be to put the mousetrap arrangement about 20 feet to the left or right of the tripwire, the bang could be used as a diversion when the enemy hear the bang they will probably turn towards it, then your team kill them all. In theory great plan, in practice, see for yourself. "

Cyalume Tripwires

We don't actually use these because : a) we have never had a night battle b) none of us actually own one.

What they are is a device that snaps a light stick or cyalume when you pull a trip wire. in night games these should be great.

Cost : They are available for about £16.95 from Uncle Sam's Military Catalogue (01705 838 800 or usmc@catalogue.freeserve.co.uk)

Pyrotechnics

Rockets

This may sound a bit psychopathic to start with but its really quite safe.

We use regular firework rockets (you know like "Bad Boy Big Bang Rockets" or "Screamer Rockets" only small cheap ones not massive expensive ones). No wait, before you condemn us, we don't actually launch them at each other [we're not that insane]. We just launch them straight up in the air, they're more for the noise than anything else, it makes the enemy keep their head down for a couple of seconds.

Use them if you like, but be sensible.

Cost : Available nearly only around bonfire night time - about £2.00 for 10

Airbombs

These again are regular fireworks. They are basically a cardboard tube with a plastic prong on the end and a fuse sticking out of the side. You light the fuse and when it has burned down, you see a flash come out of the end and another smaller cardboard tube shoots out of the end. After couple of seconds said cardboard tube explodes with a flash of light and a bang.

Quite fun to use, kinda like a mortar.

Cost : About £1.00 for 4

Bangers

These things are like little sticks of dynamite. Light the fuse throw it and it makes a bang. That's it....... where can I get these I hear you ask...... well you can't in 1998 the English government decided they were too dangerous and are no longer available. [I have been informed via e-mail that in Calais you can buy French bangers in the Hypermarkets. But be carefull these French bangers can take your hand off !]. I have about 20 left... I'm saving them for a special occasion.

Party Popper Grenade Launchers

What you do is get those brightly coloured bottle shaped party poppers with the string on one end [party poppers], and empty out out the streamers (remove the cardboard disc on top and tip them out). Then fill them with BB's, about 10 or 20, no more.
Then cover the top where the cardboard disc was with cling film (the stuff you wrap food in), tape down the cling film and you're ready to go !
How to use :

I have three taped in a triangle on the bottom of the barrel of my Uzi. When  I want to use one I just point and pull the string.

You could attach the modified party popper to a mouse trap (see Party Popper tripwires) - or you could just hold them in your hand, point it in the desired direction and pull the string. Either way is perfectly safe.

Cost From Wilkinsons : Party Poppers £0.49 per 12 or £1.99 for 50. Mouse Trap (small) - 30p

                                       Fishing line [3lb is best] about £2.50 - £3.00.

Grenades

Apparently [I have never seen or used one] these are grenade shaped cardboard boxes with a fuse on the top. Light the fuse, throw it. Simple as that.

Cost : About £3.00 each I think, though they are usually less if you buy about 5

Paint Grenades.

These are just like the Enola Gaye type airsoft grenades (they are made by them) except that instead of the bag of bb's inside there is a bag of paint. When the fuse burns down a load of paint goes flying around everywhere. Note : Paint grenades are usually banned at all professional skirmish sites, so you would probably just have to use them with your friends.

Cost : Paint grenades - £3.50 each usually.

Smoke Bombs

These things are quite useful, light one and it starts giving off loads of smoke (you can get different colours). They vary from professional pyrotechnic types, to joke type. You can also get smoke bombs from most plumbing supply stores - plumbers use them to check piping and vents etc... Whatever kind you get, they make airsoft more exciting.. there's nothing like charging through a smoke screen when you don't know what's on the other side.

Cost : from 50p for 2 to £7.00 each
