South Breitenbush Gorge
Directions:
From Detroit, turn onto Road 46, and follow it for
14 miles to until reaching Road 4685. Turn right onto this
road following, for 0.25 miles to the first access point.
There are also access points at 2.25 miles from the beginning
of the road, and one at 1/3 miles past the second access point.
The Trail:
The trail gives the hiker quite a options, from getting
a shuttle from one end of the trail to the other, or creating
shorter or longer trips by using the different access points.
From the first access point, a short access trail takes you
to the main trail. Take a left at the junction, following
the signs for the gorge. After a short distance, there is
a side trail which leads to the "Emerald Forest." I only ended
up walking to the bridge over the creek, and am not sure how
far the trail is. The main trail continues through the forest,
passing through an area of fallen trees. After a 1.5 miles,
look out for the trail to the right, which leads to the impressive
gorge.
