Subject: better 2nd range session
hi all,
took out my Bren Ten Standard out to the range on Saturday (00JAN22).
had a much better shooting session...but i still had a few hitches
here and there.
i shot 30 rounds of remanufactured ammo and 30 rounds of REM UMC
yellow box.
at the beginning of the shooting session, i had three malfunctions
where
the slide would not fully go into battery. rounds 5, 15, and 23. i
had one magazine malfunction...and i think i caused it with my thumb.
no more magazine malfunctions occured and the modifications i made
with my mags seem to work. i will still buy an original mag from Erv.
after going through the remanufatured ammo (with is pretty good), i
noticed that the barrel hood wasn't sticky and didn't get stuck about
1/4" out of battery. looks like the gun is breaking in. once i got
into the UMC ammo, i had NO malfunctions!!! accuracy with the UMC
load is amazing!!! i was only doing function checks but still taking
aim at the target and group size was only 1.5" at 15 yards! one
ragged hole! only my S&W 610 and SIG P210 have this kind of accuracy.
i do have a gripe with the rear sight though. they get loose. the
became loose again and i had to tighten up the sights again. looks
like i'll have to loctite them when i'm happy with the functioning of
my Bren Ten and i settle on a load for it.
i alternated both mags to see if one was more reliable than the other.
both seem to work fine now.
Mike,
Okay...don't panic!!! :))
gotta tell u, i was on the verge of crying! hehehe...
the lube i am using has teflon in it and should help functioning. i
don't have the lube with me, but it was given to me by a fellow
shooter who uses custom 1911s that r tight. the area that gave me the
trouble was the rear of the barrel hood...there is a little extention
with a bevel on it that mates with slides breachface. i suspect that
this area needed to be broken in. the slide rails seem to be broken
in and still remain tight.
Magazines....always a problem with a gun like this where we
are struck with using aftermarket replacements for the originals. If
you are goig to fire your Bren, tweaking the mags to get them right
iof they are aftermarket may be a necessary evil.
i'm pretty sure these mags r original, but were made for the .45/10mm
Dual Master conversions. anyhoo, the mags seem to work well now, but
i will still get the numbered original mags from ESF.
Ammo...here's another variable that may have to be tested.
While I recommended not using hot loads in the Bren to prevent
any frame/slide catastrophies, you may have to go to a "warmenr" load
to get proper function. Perhaps to the 165 grain loads. The original
Norma loads were loaded REAL hot so the one load I would avoid like
the plague is the Winchester 175 grain Silvertip load. It is loaded
to the same specs as the Norma load and probably should only be shot
in Glocks :)
ammo used is high quality...even the remanufactured loads. the UMC
load is a peppy load...not quite full load, but close. if i had NORMA
loads, i wouldn't shoot them... would go into the collections. i'll
be loading up some of my own loads to break the Bren Ten in a bit
more. another 150 rounds i think it will be settled in.
Keep us posted on how you do. You are almost making me
want to take my Bren out and fire it...almost ;)
hehe...GO AND SHOOT IT! i'm bad, ain't i? hehehe
P.S. If Triton gets the Bren in production we may have an answer to
the magazine fiasco. I hope!
good news from the SHOT Show! Triton seems to be getting closer to
coming out with a resurrected Bren Ten! seems Fernando wants to make
this happen.

Hi Jon,
I have to say I am NOT surprised the Remington-UMC
ammo improved performance. I had problems with ammo in my
Glock 21 and was ready to take it to a gunsmith until I loaded in
some UMC. It ate it like there was no tomorrow! Found out my
Glock 21 does NOT like CCI ammo of any type including the brass
case variety. It DOES like fairy warm ammo though. Think I will
probably end up getting an original mag from Erv too. Not only does
it increase the collector value but it gives better reliability too. Best
of both worlds :)

P.S. O have a box of the original Norma hollow point 10mm loads.
STRICTLY for collector purposes :)
