* Education
The regular degree programmes are set up to a traditional continental-European curriculum. The academic year consists of two semesters (winter and summer term). The full study is splitted in two parts.
During Part I (comprising the first of four semesters) the following compulsory subjects are offered: mathematics, botany, geology, soil science, chemistry, physics, geodesy, et cetera. Exams are taken on lectures and exercises. Students are free to take the exams at the end of the respective course (at the end of the semester) or at a later examination date offered by the institute.
During Part II students get a compulsory training in: economy and jurisprudence; civil engineering; geotechnics and applied geology; hydrology, water management and hydraulic structures; rural water management; sanitary engineering, water provision and industrial water management; waste management and waste treatment; traffic and road constructions; rural planning and development; water ecology and water-ecological planning; land survey and geo-information systems.
Out of these 11 topics the student must choose 5 fields for specialisation. In addition students must participate in optional courses. These courses are completely independent of the regular study program and are not bound to the home university. In Part II ten weeks of practical training are obligatory and students write their final thesis ("Diplomarbeit"). The minimum study duration required to obtain the degree of "Diplom Ingenieur" which is regarded as the equivalent of a M.Sc. degree is ten semesters or five years.* Doctorate
The admission requirement is the completed regular study (Dipl. Ing. degree) or equivalent prevailing studies for foreign students. Doctorate programme students have to enrol as regular students and attend doctoral courses during a minimum period of four semesters. Courses are selected individually by the students and approved by the head of the academic board for Ph.D studies. The PhD thesis is first evaluated by two experts and then defended in a rigorosum. The minimum time required for a PhD study is two years. The average study duration is 3 to 4 years. The thesis may be written in German or as accepted by the promotor in a foreign language.
