* Foreword

In order to encourage the acquisition of new knowledge (objective 1 of the White Paper) DG XX II launched the pilot-project ESAS (European Skill Accreditation System) - Environment-Water, to be carried out in collaboration with the thematic network ETNET.ENVIRONMENT-WATER under the SOCRATES/ERASMUS programme. This pilot-project will involve the development, on CD-ROM and on the Internet, of the first European database to assess and validate basic knowledge (age level: 16 - 18 years) in respect to all water & environment related questions.
The aim is to offer any European citizen the opportunity, on one hand, to test and accredit (reward) his/her knowledge and on the other hand to be able to provide information, (where lacking), which allows him/her to gain further knowledge (encouragement). Other databases at higher levels or for testing professional skills could be ultimately developed.
These databases have been devised as independent, automatic tests being complementary and non-competitive to traditional tests.

* Methods of Testing
  1. MCQ : Multiple Choice Questions
  2. True or False
  3. Fill in the blank spaces
  4. Place objects or images in order
  5. Drag and drop
  6. Games
The different topics have been classified under two units (see diagram) each one comprising of 5 different themes. Each question may be qualitative, quantitative or for reflection (3 modules).
