* European Training Courses on Water Quality Measurements

Course A: "Monitoring and Measurements of Lake Recipients".

This Course, sponsored by EC-DG XII, will be held on 25th-29th August 1997 at the Finnish Environment Institute, Helsinki / Finland. Topics to be covered in the Course will be Hydrological and limnological features of different lake types, The choice and measurement of different monitoring variables, Eutrophication and acidification of lakes, Harmful substances and compounds in lake ecosystems, Microbiological methods, QA procedure, intercalibration - standardization, Freshwater monitoring network for the area covered by the European Environmeny Agency (EEA), Remote sensing, Water quality classification - water quality indices. * Green Paper on Transnational Mobility: Commission opens Web interface

The Commission has opened a Web interface to ensure the widest possible response to the Green paper. The aim of the Green Paper is to address the obstacles which restrict the freedom of movement of Community citizens wishing to train, undertake research or do voluntary work in another Member State.

The Green Paper addresses questions such as tax and social security, residence rights, transferability of grants and recognition of qualifications, as well as looking at specific situations such as trainees on company placements, or third country nationals resident in a Member State.

* Council Conclusions of 17th February 1997 on Local Community Development through Education and Training

The Council calls on the Commission to initiative a study of practice and approaches to local community development through education and training in the different Member States with a view to disseminating examples of good practice and identifying ways in which education and training, formal or non-formal, can contribute to the enrichment of life and development of skills for people at a local level.
