European Training Courses on Water Quality Measurements 1997-98
A training initiative sponsored by EC-DG XII-SM&T Workprogramme (1994)

* Contents

* Background

Quality monitoring and control of water is a widerange responsibility guided by EC directives and regulations. Such an important activity needs scientific research to improve efficiency through new instrumentation and better assessment methods. A corollary to research is training for improving the efficiency, for promoting "best practices" and, in general, for transfer of the latest proven scientific knowledge in the field.

* The Subject of This Undertaking

In compliance with the SM&T Workprogramme (1994) of the 4th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Commission and its "Preparatory, Accompanying and Support Measures" a "Specific Training for Exploitation and Technology Transfer" is proposed through a series of short courses with a truly European dimension and prepared by a Specialist Group "MEASURMENTS" of TECHWARE. The proposal "Training for Water Quality Measurements" has been prpared by seven leading organisations:

* Training Needs and Target Groups

The target groups are expected to be managers, professionals and technicians of water quality laboratories with monitoring responsibilities, i.e. from the regulator organisations, the water production sector, health and sanitary control institutes and the private sector.

* Objectives and Structure of The Courses

The course structure has developed to take into account the two following aspects:

These aspects will be addressed through plenary sessions (seminar- type), workshops on specific topics and real case discussions (if needed, in parallel sessions) and practical training in the labor- atory facilities. If appropriate, a field trip for sampling procedures may be included.
