15th Century
Wars of the Roses (1455 - 1485)
Men of Warwick
John Corbett (John Roop)
John was born the fourth son of prosperous peasant farmer near the village
of Corbett (from whence he took his name). John had little desire to pursue
farming and it was clear that his brothers would inherit the farm. Instead,
inspired by the tales told by veterans returning from the wars in France,
he decided to try his hand at a military career. His meager training as
a member of the village's militia gave him the opportunity to become a
billman and was sent across the Channel to fight the French.
In France, John gained much experience despite the gradual defeat that
the English suffered at the hands of their enemy. As the wars ended, John
found himself in Calais and took advantage of an opportunity to join the
Earl of Warwick's personal guard. Warwick's captain furnished him with
the necessary gear to serve as a man-at-arms.
