The Great Falls of the Nahanni - morning of August 26, 1927
My friend Ray Patterson gave me this picture. It's the first one he took the morning we reached the Great Falls.
That's me on the rock. In his book, "Dangerous River", he showed the afternoon photo without me and claimed he had gotten there on his own, but the truth is, he couldn't. He tried the day before but couldn't get around that last turn in Fourth Canyon, the current was too strong.
There was no ledge above to track on like he wrote in his book. No, he had to drop back to the mouth of the Flat where I was camped, and the next day, the 26th, we went up together in my canoe. I had a small kicker going and was poling from the boat while Ray tracked along the shallows. It was an effort, but a sight worth seeing!
Ray mentioned my being with him in his next book, "Buffalo Head". But, in the diary he kept, he wrote that as he was pulling the rope ahead of me in the canoe he rounded the point first and saw the Falls before me. He was the bragging sort, but it don't matter, he's still a good friend.
But these weren't the first Nahanni pictures. No sir!
