How it all bagan...
Pretty well all my life I have been a guy who simply loves freedom and being able to go where I want to go. I live up here in the Great White North in the wonderful province of Ontario where there are tons and tons of lakes and rivers. Ever since I was a child, I always seemed to somehow find my way down to the waters edge. The whole place was alive with interesting little things. There were all kinds of plants, insects, birds, minnows, crayfish, rocks, shells, tracks, and piles of other neat stuff for a kid to be amazed at. I could spend the whole day on the shore of some river and never see the same things twice.
While most of the other kids were playing snakes and ladders, I was locating and observing real snakes and frogs, mice and bugs of every description. I never even knew the meaning of the word bored, because the outdoors saw to it that this young boy simply had no time to be bored. I think more kids to-day should discover the outdoor world so that they too can become interested in real stuff instead of video games. So many of them are game junkies at an early age already. This can't in all honesty be a good thing. Blowing things up and shooting, hacking and otherwise killing the bad guys isn't teaching them much that they can apply in the real world.

As a teenager I started roaming farther and for longer periods of time, exploring nature at it's finest and all it's nooks and crannies.
I learned to live at least partially off the land by reading every book in the library of my small home town and by talking with older people who knew this sort of stuff in most cases.
It was difficult back then, finding friends who were into the same stuff as I was. There was no such thing as E-mail and the Internet to help me communicate my love for the bush. Other kids were mostly interested in playing games and watching television.
The thought of being in the wilderness frightened most of them. Lots of times they would try to discourage me from going out there by telling me that I would probably get lost or eaten by bears or wolves.
This never bothered me because I knew they were all suffering from a lack of knowledge about the wilderness and nature in general.
When I was 14 I met another kid at the library after school one day. He and I hit it off immediately because he also had a very keen interest in fishing and the outdoors. His parents had a cottage on the French River, and he had spent a lot of time there with his dad showing him some of the wonders and beauty of nature. We became really, really close friends and were inseperable all through high school.
Our time spent together was always somehow related to the outdoors. In the fall we hunted small game together and bagged many rabbits and grouse because of our expertise in the woods. If we had a nickle for every fish we ever caught together we would have truly been rich dudes before we were twenty.
